Ischgl: skiing without borders and an uncompromising Alpine lifestyle

Some Alpine resorts set their own standards and create trends for skiers across Europe. Ischgl, at the heart of Tyrol's Paznaun valley, is a destination where top-level sport meets an international atmosphere and avant-garde cuisine. The 2026/27 winter season in Ischgl is all about vast terrain and complete freedom, bringing skiers together under the slogan “YOUR MEMORIES, YOUR PARADISE”.

Pitztal: a winter haven without the crowds, with guaranteed snow

Pitztal, proudly and deservedly known as the “Roof of Tyrol”, is a truly distinctive destination on Austria's winter map. It still holds out against mass tourism and remains a genuine, well-kept secret. Thanks to its spectacular altitude, the valley is one of the most varied and most snow-sure holiday regions in the whole of the Alps.

Skirama Dolomiti or Dolomiti Superski? Two ski passes people keep mixing up

Skirama Dolomiti or Dolomiti Superski? Two ski passes people keep mixing up

This article grew out of your comments. Under the series on Dolomiti Superski ski pass prices that I published over the past few weeks, the same question kept coming back: does this apply to Madonna di Campiglio? And to Folgarida and Marilleva? It does not. Neither one nor the other. And since you ask about it regularly, the problem lies not with you but with the names, because today practically everyone confuses Skirama Dolomiti and Dolomiti Superski, travel agencies and tourism websites included.

Dolomiti Superski compensation: the portal is live, queues last hours and the exclusions to know before you apply

The claims portal opened on Thursday 15 October and could not keep up the same day. Italian media described virtual queues of four or five hours, the process freezing after login and an error page where the claim confirmation should have appeared. The consortium did not hide the scale of the traffic. “We have received too many requests and the system cannot handle them all,” the operator admitted, adding that technicians are working to increase capacity and that refunds are being processed. “We just ask for patience.”

Glaciers in November 2026: what conditions to expect from 7 to 14 November

Five centimetres. That is how much snow Hintertux reported at its top station at 3,224 m on 9 October, and this is, after all, the resort regarded in Austria as the benchmark for snow reliability. So glaciers in November 2026 will be starting from a lower base than in previous years. What can be said today about conditions for 7 to 14 November?

Formigal-Panticosa: exploring Spain's largest ski resort

I left Barcelona very early, before dawn. A few hours later a completely different landscape lay in front of me: the snow-covered peaks of the Aragonese Pyrenees and a cloudless sky over Formigal-Panticosa. I expected a typical spring March, with slushy snow and a wet jacket before noon. What I found was something else. Up to three metres of snow on the upper slopes and conditions you do not see here every year. Formigal-Panticosa, the largest ski area in Spain, showed me a side of itself I will be talking about for a long time.

Pitztal Glacier has opened the 2026/27 season: early conditions and new prices

The first Gletscherexpress train left today at 07:00. The Pitztal Glacier opened the 2026/27 season on schedule on 26 September, the first glacier ski area in Austria to do so this autumn. It is a modest start: two pistes, 2.5 km, and skiing at the top only until 13:00. After a summer like this one, that is still more than anyone could have expected.

Südtirol Skiarena 2026/27: 18 resorts, 555.7 km of pistes and a ski pass valid all year

From the 2026/27 season there is a new player on the ski map of South Tyrol: Südtirol Skiarena. It is more than a new name for the Ortler Skiarena, which has been around for decades. The association has taken in three large resorts, reached into the east of the region and replaced the classic season pass with a card valid for 365 days. A single ski pass now covers 18 ski and leisure areas, 555.7 km of pistes and 118 cable cars and lifts.

Maso Corto has opened the 2026/27 season: what is running, ski pass prices and where to stay

Exactly 35 years ago, on 19 September 1991, the German hikers Erika and Helmut Simon found the roughly 5,300-year-old mummy of Ötzi near the Tisenjoch pass. On the anniversary of that discovery, Maso Corto opens the 2026/27 season and is one of the first resorts in the Alps to let skiers onto the glacier. I come back here regularly and I know that a September start needs reading carefully. For now, national teams and training groups have priority on the glacier, and whether recreational skiing is possible has to be checked day by day. The fuller winter offer, including the pistes running down to the lower part of the resort, is due to start on 28 November.

Austrian glaciers 2026: when the snow will fall and when the resorts open

Mid-September is when skiers increasingly start checking the webcams and weather forecasts for the highest parts of the Alps. Austria's glaciers are getting ready for the autumn season, and the first planned piste openings are only a couple of weeks away. So the question is obvious: when will winter arrive at altitude in the Alps, and will October bring conditions that allow a good start to the season?

Špindlerův Mlýn links its ski areas: I visited the building site and the launch of the new Audi Line Přehradní lift

When I stood below the valley station of the new lift by the former P1 car park on Tuesday 8 September, I saw this project for the first time as something more than a visualisation. The station structure, complete with its full set of rope sheaves, already sits on its supports, a crane and a telehandler are at work beside it, and every tower along the line is in place. Špindlerův Mlýn is carrying out the largest investment in the resort's history and one of the biggest projects ever in Czech skiing, and since this summer it has been plainly visible from the road from Vrchlabí.
