About Bansko

Bansko, in the Pirin mountains, is currently one of the most attractive ski resorts in Eastern Europe. Skiers from outside Bulgaria discovered it quite recently, but it has been well known in the country for many years. The main ski area lies below Todorka peak (2,746 m). Bansko consists of several smaller areas: on the northern slopes above the town are Chalin Valog (1,100 to 1,600 m) and Shiligarnika (1,700 to 2,500 m). The third ski area is Banderishka Poliana. Winter sports fans are drawn here not only by the ski infrastructure and accommodation, but also by the special atmosphere and stunning views (Pirin National Park is a UNESCO World Heritage Site). The resort has 65 kilometres of superbly groomed pistes. The modern, high-capacity lift network totals 22 km. There is a gondola, chairlifts (2-, 3- and 4-seater) and T-bars, including lifts for children. 80% of the pistes have snow cannons. About 35% of the pistes are for beginners. Among the blue pistes is the resort's longest, 16 km long, with snowmaking and floodlighting. On the whole, though, Bansko is a resort whose strengths will be appreciated mainly by skiers with some experience. There are many red pistes (the longest, Balkaniada, is about 2,500 m long) and black ones (25% are expert pistes that demand really good technique). The resort's ski school has instructors teaching in several languages, in private and group lessons (5 ability levels). There are also cross-country lessons. For children there is a ski kindergarten and a ski school. Freestyle fans have a snow park. The hire shops offer a wide choice of equipment (skis and snowboards). For cross-country skiers there is essentially just one 5 km trail at 1,530 m. There are, however, good conditions for biathlon, snowshoeing and paragliding, and heliskiing is also on offer. Bansko hosts numerous winter sports events. One of the best known is the Extreme Ski & Snowboard Competition (others include the "Pirin" Ski Cup Competition and the Balkan Ski Cup Competition). The resort is working to host World Cup and European Cup races in the future. After skiing, plenty awaits visitors: many taverns and bars, tasty food and a pleasant atmosphere. Over the last 10 years the small town of Bansko, picturesquely set at the foot of the Pirin mountains, has become extremely popular with tourists. It manages to combine the modern and the traditional in a unique way. There are many historic monuments and interesting cultural sites both in the town itself and in the surrounding area.
