Zauchensee, picturesquely set in a mountain basin at 1,350 m, is the highest resort in the large Austrian winter sports region of Salzburger Sportwelt, which has more than 850 kilometres of pistes in total. The village was built in the 1960s. During your stay you may well feel that it was designed specifically for skiers: the lifts are easy to reach from every side, the slopes of the Gamskogel (2,188 m) and the Roßkopf (1,930 m) tempt you with well-groomed, varied pistes, and the guaranteed natural snow cover is topped up by snow cannons when needed. There are plenty of beds and parking spaces in Zauchensee. The pistes here are among the most varied and most difficult in the whole Salzburger Sportwelt. It is not without reason that Zauchensee is an international sports resort, a venue for World Cup races and other European and international sporting events, and a FIS training centre. Skiing stars such as Annemarie Moser-Pröll, Hermann Maier and Michael Walchofer grew up on the pistes of Zauchensee! Experienced skiers can try their hand on the black World Cup piste. The Skiparadies Zauchensee-Flachauwinkl-Kleinarl ski area has more than 90 kilometres of linked pistes in total. The championship pistes on steep slopes are complemented by gentle blue sections and attractive red runs for intermediates. 25 lifts provide a capacity of more than 35,000 people per hour. The resort is not only good for guests staying in Zauchensee. It is worth coming here from any resort in Salzburger Sportwelt, and even on a day trip from Salzburg itself (on the A10 motorway towards Villach to the Radstadt/Altenmarkt or Flachauwinkl exit). Next to the World Cup arena there is a large underground car park with room for 350 cars (ski pass holders park free) and 20 coaches. On site you can get help from trained instructors who look after both adults and children (for the youngest there is a special lift and a magic carpet). Equipment can be hired, tested or even bought on arrival. The food and après-ski offer will satisfy everyone. Hotels, restaurants, mountain huts, covered open-air bars, discos and nightclubs await guests. Menus feature regional and international specialities. Zauchensee is also a great place for snowboarders, tobogganers, cross-country skiers (a highlight is the difficult 24 km trail at altitudes of 856 to 1,350 m) and ski touring and snowshoeing fans.
