The ski terrain around Laax is part of a larger area called the Alpenarena. It is the largest linked winter sports resort in the whole canton of Graubünden and is famous for its excellent snow conditions. Besides Laax, the Alpenarena takes in the ski terrain around Flims and Falera. The ski season here runs from December to Easter; you can ski a little longer on the pistes of the Vorab glacier, where the season lasts roughly from October to the end of April. The glacier area (2,570 to 3,018 m) is not among the largest: it has just two pistes (one blue, one red) and two T-bars (1.5 km long in total). Black pistes lead down from here to Alp Ruschein (1,774 m), and an off-piste run goes to Fuorcla (2,118 m). The Alpenarena is popular with young people in both winter and summer. In the winter months it is a real hub of winter sports, while in summer it turns into a paradise for mountain bikers. The main base for the Alpenarena pistes is Laax, or more precisely Laax-Murschetg, a settlement made up mostly of hotels and holiday homes. Good terrain for beginners and families with children is found on the south-west-facing slopes of Crap Sogn Gion. Steeper and more demanding pistes run on the opposite slopes. The Alpenarena is an excellent choice for snowboarders and freeride fans; there are plenty of attractive off-piste runs. For cross-country skiers the area offers more than 40 km of trails. Unfortunately few trails run higher up, where the snow conditions are best. The compensation is the superb scenery: the trails wind picturesquely among hills, frozen lakes and forests. The Ruinaulta gorge, which has even been dubbed the Grand Canyon of Switzerland, has a special charm. The range of non-skiing activities in the region is exceptionally wide. You can choose from many forms of active recreation, events and entertainment. Many of them are designed especially for children.
