Valmorel, together with St. François Longchamp, is part of the extensive Grand Domaine ski area, which stretches between the Lauzière and Cheval Noir massifs and has 150 km of pistes. The resort was created in the 1970s by expanding an existing village. Thanks to its preserved traditional architecture (stone and timber houses roofed with distinctive stone tiles), Valmorel has kept the charm of an old Savoyard village and is today considered one of the prettiest ski resorts in France. The pistes around Valmorel total 95 km. It is particularly recommended for beginners and families with children, as many of the slopes are perfect for learning. Intermediates will also find plenty of pistes. There are few truly difficult runs. Experienced skiers can, however, let rip on extensive freeride terrain. Snowboarders will also feel at home here, and not only because of the great off-piste opportunities. St. François Longchamp has a varied snow park, and Valmorel a halfpipe and boardercross. A big advantage of the resort is easy access to the slopes and the chance to ski back to your hotel without taking your skis off. On the minus side, most of the pistes lie below 2,000 m, so snow can be a problem at times. Cross-country skiers will find more varied trails around St. François Longchamp. The trails total: Valmorel 20 km, St. François Longchamp 40 km. Activities away from the slopes include snowshoeing, sleigh rides and paragliding. St. François Longchamp also offers hot-air balloon flights, dog sledding and a toboggan run. In the evenings life centres on Valmorel's pretty, car-free old centre. You can stroll under its distinctive arcades, go shopping or sit down in one of the many bars and restaurants serving regional food. Every so often you may come across street festivals or shows held during the sports competitions that often take place here.
