About the resort

About Valloire

Valloire is a large ski resort set picturesquely in the Maurienne valley in the Northern Alps, at the foot of the famous Col du Galibier. Together with nearby Valmeinier, Valloire forms the largest ski area in southern Savoie, with a total of 150 km of pistes. The skiing is very attractive. 83 pistes of varying difficulty are served by 34 lifts. 70% of the ski area lies above 2,000 m. Excellent snow throughout the season is ensured not only by the north-facing aspect of most slopes but also by a modern snowmaking system (more than 400 snow cannons). The local climate brings a large number of sunny days, so visiting skiers can count not only on fantastic runs but also on enjoying the sun in midwinter. The linked ski areas of Valloire and Valmeinier offer the most choice for intermediate and less experienced skiers (45 blue and 32 red pistes). Advanced skiers have 6 black runs and off-piste terrain. Snowboarders like coming to the Maurienne valley. A special freeride sector has been set aside for them at 2,600 m. The resort also has a snow park (halfpipe, boardercross, big air, hips, quarters), and snowboard courses combined with freeride lessons are run. Valloire is attractive for cross-country skiers: 25 km of trails have been laid out here (including Valmeinier). The trails at Les Verneys suit beginners and intermediates, while advanced skiers should head for the Balcon de Valloire. There is a great deal to do away from the slopes: paragliding, an artificial ice rink of 1,800 m², snowshoe walks, a swimming pool, a fitness and wellness centre (sauna, hammam, jacuzzi, exercise classes), a climbing wall and a bowling alley. The village also has a cultural centre (cinema, library, multimedia room). The local historical attraction is the so-called Baroque Trail, which includes the 17th-century church in Valloire. The annual snow and ice sculpture competition, with entrants from many countries, is very well known. Nearby Valmeinier also has plenty to offer, including a new toboggan run floodlit in the evening. Both villages have nightclubs and a wide choice of bars, pubs and shops. New for winter 2006/2007: * The new de la Girodière 4-seater lift. * Arva Park: an avalanche search training area. * The Brive panoramic restaurant and the Séa botanical trail, both reached by cable car. * Contactless ski passes, discounts on ski passes for children aged 10 to 14. Events calendar: * 18 to 21 January 2007: Ice Sculpture Competition * 23 to 26 January 2007: 24th International Snow Sculpture Competition. Valloire is also a resort that has managed to keep its Savoyard identity and character. Plenty of entertainment after skiing and easy access thanks to the nearby motorway.
