Châtel is one of the fourteen resorts that make up the Portes du Soleil, a huge ski domain on the French-Swiss border with a total of 650 km of downhill pistes. The ski area of Châtel, which lies halfway between Mont Blanc and Lake Geneva in the very heart of the Portes du Soleil, is divided into 2 parts: Barbossine/Super-Châtel and Linga/Pré-la-Joux. The pistes here vary in difficulty and can cater for different tastes. The downside is the relatively low altitude, which means there are sometimes snow problems, especially on the lower sections of the pistes. The alternative then is a trip (by car or on skis) to higher areas such as Avoriaz, where there is always plenty of snow. Châtel also has a ski link with the resorts of Torgon and Morgins on the Swiss side. Adrenaline lovers will certainly enjoy the snow park and the 250 m speed track, the so-called Super-Chatel Fun and Educational Zone, Z'ALP for short. Châtel holds the "P’tits Montagnards" label, which the Ski France club awards (according to strict criteria) to resorts with the most interesting winter holiday offer for children. Besides many activities organised for young children, this means discounts, specially prepared slopes, child-friendly lifts, ski schools and ski kindergartens. Adults will not be bored here either, as Châtel offers its guests a wide range of activities away from skiing, including ice diving (Lac de Vonnes), paragliding and bobsleigh (a track at Pre-La-Joux). Another local attraction is the railway that runs along an exceptionally scenic route through the valley. Accommodation is fairly varied. From some hotels it is quite a long way to the lifts. The village of Châtel itself is a small, quiet mountain village that has kept its old architecture and unpretentious charm. It is certainly a good choice for people who like their skiing quiet and family-oriented, as there is no intense nightlife in the local bars. Evenings in the village tend to be calm and quiet, but you will have no trouble finding a cosy inn serving regional food.
