About Rofan

Winter around the Achensee: skiing, snowboarding and lots and lots of sunshine. Everyone who loves winter, classic and carving skiers, snowboarders and sun-seeking day trippers, will find a home here. 30 modern lifts and cable cars take you high into the mountains to superbly maintained pistes with a total length of 50 km. Gentle skiways for the whole family, downhill runs that demand excellent fitness and special attractions for snowboarders (a boardercross course and a halfpipe) impress not only with their high standard but also with the captivating panorama of the Karwendel and Rofan mountains. We are not worried about a lack of snow: snow cannons are available in the Christlum and Rofan areas. Winter on the Achensee is not only about sporting thrills. It is also fun and relaxation, atmospheric evenings in traditional mountain huts or sweet idleness on a sun-warmed terrace with a cool drink in your hand. And if you feel like exploring other ski areas, just hop on the free ski bus, which runs regularly between the villages, lifts and cross-country trails. Cross-country skiing on the Achensee: 150 km of mountain adventure. The Achensee holiday region has one of the largest cross-country networks in Austria, a fantastic 150 km. The trails run along the lakeshore and spread out into every valley of the Karwendel nature park. A Tyrolean quality certificate confirms that they are excellently maintained. Proof of the valley residents' remarkable ingenuity is the environmentally friendly way they add snow to the trails: fresh snow from higher up is brought down to the valley by tractor and spread over icy sections of the cross-country trails with a spreader. The route takes you through picturesque winter landscapes: first a high-mountain stage at 1,100 m, then a forest track, then open flat country with solitary wayside chapels, wide white spaces, silence all around and majestic mountains. Along the way you can stop at cosy huts or mountain shelters to rest on a sunny terrace. When you want something new, just board the free ski bus and set off to conquer the next slopes. The Achensee, the largest and most beautiful lake in Tyrol, is framed to the west by the picturesque Karwendel massif and to the east by the majestic Rofan range. Famous for its crystal-clear water, the lake is the centre of an attractive holiday region stretching from Pertisau through Maurach to Achenkirch and Steinberg. The Achensee lies away from the main transit roads, yet it is easy to reach across the Austrian-German border from the Tegernsee side. In our little paradise for hikers and cyclists you will get a taste of active holidays. We specialise in family holidays, so we set out with you on voyages of discovery around the lake to swim, cycle or inline skate, play tennis, go rock climbing or simply fish. For those who prefer to take it easy while enjoying impressive scenery, we suggest a ride on the oldest steam cog railway in Europe. It runs through the forest down to the shore of the Achensee, where you can change to an excursion boat for a romantic cruise. If you are aiming higher, cable cars will take you up the Zwölferkopf from Pertisau or from Maurach straight into the heart of the Rofan. The Achensee area is also an excellent base for full-day coach or car trips. Well-known and important cities such as Salzburg, Innsbruck and Munich are about an hour away by motorway. Mountain hikers will find more than 120 km of marked trails here, and we have also prepared numerous cycle routes of varying difficulty. The range of attractions does not end with a modern golf course and the largest private Lipizzaner stud farm in Austria. You will find practically everything here, except big-city noise.
