Located in Tyrol at the foot of the picturesque Kalkkögel range, Axamer Lizum is one of nine resorts that make up the extensive Olympia SkiWorld Innsbruck ski area. SkiWorld Innsbruck brings together Nordpark-Seegrube, Patscherkofel, Kühtai, Rangger Köpfl, Glungezer, Schlick 2000, Stubaier Gletscher, Muttereralm and Axamer Lizum, with nearly 300 km of pistes and 78 lifts in total. The ski terrain of Axamer Lizum is centred on the small village of Axams, set in a sunny valley at 878 m. The area is known for excellent snow conditions as well as plenty of sunny days in winter. Axamer Lizum is in fact a vast high mountain pasture at 1,583 to 2,343 m, which in winter turns into superb ski terrain with a wide variety of slopes and efficient lifts. The alpine events of the Olympic Games have been held here twice so far. Experienced skiers can therefore test themselves on the Olympic downhill courses on the slopes of the Hoadl or on the mogul-covered slopes of the Birgitzköpfl. Axamer Lizum in fact offers the most choice to skilled skiers. Easy pistes are relatively scarce here. A draw for snowboarders (besides good freeride terrain) is the snow park on the Hoadl, next to the former Olympic women's downhill. Cross-country skiers will not find many particularly varied trails right around Axams. If you make it to the village of Natters, however, you can use its extensive network of cross-country trails. Non-skiing activities at Axamer Lizum include tobogganing (an 8 km toboggan run leads from Axamer Lizum down to Axams), ice skating, curling and horse-drawn sleigh rides. You can recharge at the leisure pool complex in Axams (indoor pool, outdoor thermal pool, saunas, massages). The choice of evening entertainment is relatively wide for a quiet Tyrolean village, which Axams has remained even after two Olympics. Cosy inns with regional cuisine predominate. For big-city entertainment there is Innsbruck, just 9 km away and worth a visit anyway for its historic sights and cultural events.
