The 3S Eisgratbahn to the Stubai Glacier

Stubaier Gletscher, AustriaBy Jacek Ciszak27 photos

The 3S Eisgratbahn gondola, 4.7 km long in total and built by the Italian company Leitner, is the longest tricable gondola in the Alps. In 11 minutes it runs from the new Mutterberg valley station at 1,697 m, via the enlarged Fernau mid-station, to the Eisgrat top station at 2,900 m. In all it climbs 1,200 vertical metres and passes 7 towers. With a capacity of 3,000 people per hour, it can carry twice as many passengers as the previous gondola. The cabins also deserve a mention: they were designed by the Italian design gurus of the Pininfarina studio. Each has 24 leather seats, 8 standing places and free Wi-Fi.
