Intelligence Technology

Intelligence™ Technology - electronic ski management system
The problem
Modern carving skis are subjected to more torsional forces and twisting during a turn. These torsional forces can cause the edge to lose contact with the snow.

The challenge
At Head we were looking for a way to adapt the torsional stability to the constantly changing speed, terrain and snow conditions.

The solution
Head Intelligence skis adjust dynamically to every skiing situation.

Intellifibres - The material
At the heart of Head Intelligence skis there are so-called Intellifibres that are able to transform mechanical energy into electrical energy. The higher the force, the more energy is created. Conversely, when the fibers receive an electrical impulse, they change their shape and convert this energy into mechanical power.

Intellifibres - The principle of function
The Intellifibres are placed at a 45-degree angle in the ski for maximum exposure to torsional forces when the skier makes a turn. The electric energy created by the Intellifibers is captured inside the material and disruptive frequencies are filtered out. The remaining energy is fired back to the Intellifibres which straighten instantly increasing the torsional stability of the ski. This all happens in just 5 milliseconds.

Intellifibres - The result
Intelligence skis react instantly to changes of snow, terrain and speed and adjust the torsional stability to the actual situation, thereby ensuring precise turns and perfect control of the ski.

Intelligence Chip System
The flagships of the Intelligence line with the auto-controlling Intelligence Chip System are currently the ultimate in ski technology.

Intelligence Chip System - The principle of function
The electrical energy generated by the Intellifibres is sent through a circuit to a microchip embedded in the ski, underneath the binding. There it is amplified seven times and fired back to the Intelllifibres. The reinforced energy creates a counterforce of the Intellifibres that correct the torsional movements of the ski even more effectively. This process does not take longer than 5/1000's of a second. The ski is dynamically stabilized without impairing its liveliness.

Intelligence Chip System - The result
A ski that adjusts its torsional behavior automatically to the changing conditions: for perfect carving, maximum ski control and even better grip on ice.

Head Intellgenece Chip System - the first electronic ski management system in the world.

Worldcup Sandwich Construction

Hand built by the finest ski technicians in the modern world. The vertical laminate wood core is embraced by speedfreak phenolic sidewalls and the finest Titanal. This is the fastest construction on the planet.

KERS

KERS Technology works like a turbo charger that provides additional power and acceleration by stiffening the tail of the ski in outturns.
The effect: a boost, catapulting the rider into the next turn. Just like when Formula 1 pilots push a button for that extra notch of speed.
HEAD KERS Technology is an electronic, fully automatic and integrated system.

HOW IT WORKS
Skis experience maximum flex at the end of a turn. At this moment the energy is released into the fibers of the tail. The tail of the ski then stiffens up, immediately increasing rebound for maximum acceleration at the end of the outturn.

TECHNICAL BACKGROUND
HEAD KERS Technology is an evolution of the idea behind HEAD’s Intelligence Technology. In addition KERS does not influence the torsional stiffness of the ski, KERS empowers the skis’ longitudinal flex. Also KERS Technology is based on a completely new design capable of accumulating power and keeping it in store for the right moment.

Piezoelectric fibers transform kinetic energy into electrical energy which is stored. Electrical energy is immediately released to areas of the ski, where additional energy is requested. Timing and release are automatically controlled and coordinated. Depending on the flex pattern of different ski models, sensors are programmed beforehand: the more aggressive the ski has to be, the stiffer the tail will become.
