 | Salomon announces new on-piste alpine skiing range for winter 2022-23 |
|
The Salomon Alpine ski racing team has been on the upswing in recent seasons, buoyed by impressive performances from its World Cup athletes—like Marta Bassino’s World Cup overall title in giant slalom in 2021—and a crop of young talent rising up the ranks at both the international and local levels. The team’s growing strength has been built through an emphasis on service to athletes and, of course, innovative ski and boot products that are superior in function and radical design. With great service and superior products, the Salomon team has attracted a number of talented, up-and-coming young racers that are looking to become the next generation of World Cup stars. In the 2022-23 winter season, those athletes will be using a new S/RACE ski franchise—including the new S/RACE GS 12 and the S/RACE SL 12—created for committed on-piste skiers.
In ski boots, Switzerland’s Marco Odermatt leads the World Cup overall standings and has dominated the competition in giant slalom in the 2021-22 season using Salomon S/RACE ski boots. It’s in this category that Salomon has always led the industry with innovative performance and fit designs. The upcoming 2022-23 winter season will mark the launch of another truly radical product design in the category, the S/PRO Alpha ski boot range, which is designed to offer speed and performance with a new level of comfort.
"In ski boot design, everything starts with the foot because even minor foot problems can ruin a ski day," says Paul-Eric Chamay, Salomon’s Product Line Manager for Alpine ski boots. "The foot is also the key to steering the ski on the slope, so it must be well-fit to the boot and lead the movement to the ski. As podiatrists will tell you, the most important part of the foot when it comes to comfort and steering is the instep, and it’s the most delicate part of the foot anatomically."
While modern ski boots allow boot-fitters to fit both high and low insteps well, ski boots have traditionally made it difficult to fit a broad range of insteps easily. To develop the new S/PRO Alpha ski boot range, Chamay and Salomon’s Alpine ski boot Design & Development Team worked with professional boot fitters from 10 countries with decades of experience fitting feet to boots. Solving fit problem through innovative solutions has always been part of Salomon’s DNA—from the Custom Shell solution in 2008 to the My CustomFit 3D solution in 2013. Now, in the S/PRO Alpha, Salomon will unveil a new fitting solution called 3D Instep Shell Technology.

Salomon announces new on-piste alpine skiing range for winter 2022-23 |
|
There are three main benefits to the 3D Instep Shell Technology in the S/PRO Alpha range, and they are found in the lower shell. First, there is more space between the two forefoot buckles, which leaves the sensitive instep area clear of any buckle pressure. Second, there is a specific 45-degree placement of the second forefoot buckle to reinforce the foothold, which is crucial for steering. Finally, Salomon redesigned the lower shell construction to dramatically improving the step-in and step-out thanks to a new "virtual hinge" that helps with opening of the overlaps.
There is also a new two-piece custom tongue that is removable from the liner via a Velcro connection. This allows boot fitters to work on the plastic tongue by relieving pressure points or adding padding to a desired area for a better instep fit, which will improve foothold.
"It’s all part of finding the perfect fit for the instep," Chamay explains. "The S/PRO Alpha allows boot-fitters to fit a broad range of insteps quite easily and much more quickly than they ever could before."
The CustomFit 4D liner also uses a Thermoformable material called Talyn on the outside of the liner, which allows a personalized fit adaptation even with the fingers and keeps softer foams closer to the ankle so it’s easier for boot fitters to improve comfort in the ankle area for the skier.

Engineered to best match the needs of the most demanding skiers, the S/RACE GS 12 ski is designed for high-power runs on groomed slopes. At 68 mm under foot and featuring Salomon’s innovative Blade technology, it offers incredible underfoot stability when gliding, but with a liveliness that allows it to be instantly reactive so you never have to shave speed, from the first turn to the last. Salomon’s Blade technology fuses flexible polymer pads into the TI layer, helping you bend the ski with less effort, and letting you to turn without losing speed. To deliver faster transitions from one turn to the next, the edge-to-edge TI construction and Salomon’s Blade technology combine the stiffness you need to glide with the liveliness you want to make turns. The S/RACE GS12 features an Ash Woodcore, a race base, two sheets of Ti and a full sandwich sidewalls construction that provides a power boost to your racing performance.
For slalom racers, the new S/RACE SL 12 ski (68 mm under foot) is designed to deliver uncompromised turning speed.
